Parliamentary Deadlock Continues as Opposition Demands Priority Debate on SIR in Both Houses

New Delhi (ATP): The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day following repeated disruptions by Opposition members demanding an immediate discussion on the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

According to reports, The Lower House first assembled at 11 AM, where Speaker Om Birla welcomed a visiting parliamentary delegation from Georgia. However, subsequent proceedings were marred by protests. When the Lok Sabha reconvened after two adjournments, Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, and TMC, trooped into the well, shouting slogans against the SIR.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed to the protesting MPs, asserting that the government was ready to discuss any issue but criticized the Opposition for being “adamant on a single issue” and disrupting other important business. Despite the Presiding Officer’s repeated pleas for order, the deadlock continued, leading to the House being adjourned for the day.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, similar protests over the SIR issue led to a walkout by Opposition members. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that the SIR discussion be taken up on a priority basis under Rule 267. After the Opposition staged their walkout, the Upper House successfully discussed and returned the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025, before adjourning for the day.
