Home Minister Highlights Significant Reduction in Naxalism, Strengthened Security Grid at Raipur Conference
RAIPUR Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 60th All-India Conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police (DGP-IGP) in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, yesterday, where he highlighted major strides in tackling internal security challenges.
The Minister asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the annual DGP/IGP Conference has become a crucial forum for formulating strategies against security threats.
A key focus of his address was the fight against Naxalism. Mr. Shah stated that the Central Government has strengthened the security grid by constructing 586 fortified police stations over the last seven years. This effort has dramatically reduced the number of Naxal-affected districts from 126 in 2014 to just 11 today. Mr. Shah pledged that India would be completely free from the menace of Naxalism before the next conference.
The Home Minister noted that the Modi government has provided permanent solutions to the three major security hotspots: Naxalism, the North-East, and Jammu & Kashmir.
To combat broader security challenges, Mr. Shah pointed to several legislative and operational measures, including strengthening the National Investigation Agency (NIA), making the UAPA more robust, introducing three new criminal laws, and enacting strong laws against narcotics and fugitive offenders. He stressed the need for a 360-degree attack on narcotics and organised crime, urging state police forces to work closely with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The successful, coordinated, nationwide raids following the ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) were cited as an outstanding example of Centre-State cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over various sessions of the conference today and tomorrow and will also present the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
