TRAI Disconnects Over 21 Lakh Fraudulent Numbers in Major Anti-Spam Drive

NEW DELHI (ATP): The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken decisive action against telecom misuse, disconnecting and blacklisting over 21 lakh fraudulent mobile numbers and approximately one lakh entities involved in sending spam and scam messages over the past year.

This large-scale enforcement was carried out in direct response to citizen complaints. The Ministry of Communications highlighted that this demonstrates that collective reporting by users is crucial in curbing telecom misuse nationwide.

TRAI has urged citizens to report spam calls and SMS exclusively through the official TRAI DND App. The regulatory body noted that when a report is filed via the app, it enables TRAI and telecom service providers to effectively trace, verify, and permanently disconnect the offending mobile numbers, thereby stopping the fraudulent activity at its source. Simply blocking a number on a personal device does not prevent the scammer from targeting other users.
