MUMBAI (ATP): Veteran actor and Padma Bhushan awardee, Dharmendra, affectionately known as Bollywood’s ‘He-Man,’ passed away at his Mumbai residence this morning at the age of 89. The superstar, who had been battling health issues, leaves behind an unmatched legacy spanning over six decades and 300 films.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in Ludhiana in 1935, he made his debut in 1960 and quickly rose to fame with his charismatic screen presence and versatility. His filmography includes classics like the iconic ‘Veeru’ in Sholay, Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Chupke Chupke.
Director-producer Karan Johar described him as a “massive mega star” and “best human being,” while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis noted that his transition from youthful romantic roles to powerful, intense characters will forever remain in the memories of film lovers. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed him for giving a “new dimension to the image of a Bollywood hero.”
Dharmendra was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and had also garnered praise for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. He is survived by his wives, Hema Malini and Prakash Kaur, and his six children, including actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. In addition to his film career, he also served as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from 2004 to 2009.
