Moscow Calls for ‘Equitable and Inclusive Approach’ to Gaza Stability, Raises Concerns Over US Draft’s Adherence to Two-State Solution
UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK: Russia has formally prepared and circulated an alternative draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on achieving sustainable peace in the Gaza Strip, directly challenging a resolution proposed by the United States. According to a comment issued by the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN, the move was necessitated by the US draft’s failure to adequately reflect the universally recognized international legal framework.
The Russian mission stressed that any UNSC decision, being central to maintaining international peace and security, must reaffirm fundamental decisions and principles, “first and foremost the two-State solution for the Israeli-Palestinian settlement.” Moscow argues that these core provisions were not given due regard in the US text.
“In this context, the Russian Federation felt obliged to propose an alternative draft UNSC resolution on achieving sustainable peace in the Gaza Strip,” the comment stated.
Moscow’s proposal aims to enable the Security Council to define clear modalities for the post-conflict phase. Russia’s draft resolution specifically calls on the UN Secretary-General to prepare a report for the Security Council with options for implementing the relevant provisions of US President Donald Trump’s plan.
