KYIV, UKRAINE: Ukraine has taken delivery of additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, a critical reinforcement to its air shield, as Russian forces maintain their relentless aerial attacks targeting cities and infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the deployment late Sunday, stating the new units were a result of a direct agreement with Berlin. “More Patriots are now in Ukraine and being put into operation,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post. “Of course, more systems are needed to protect key infrastructure sites and our cities across the entire territory of our state.”
The President specifically thanked Germany and its Chancellor Friedrich Merz for the delivery, which fulfills a pledge made by Berlin months ago to provide two more Patriot systems. Germany has now supplied more Patriot systems from its own military stocks than any other country, according to the German Defence Ministry.
The arrival of the highly sophisticated Patriot systems comes at an urgent time, as Russia escalates its campaign of nightly missile and drone strikes ahead of winter. In the latest overnight attack, Russian drones hit a house in the northeastern Sumy region, killing one man and injuring five of his family members, including two children, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The Patriot systems are widely regarded as the most effective defense against the wide array of Russian missiles, including ballistic and cruise variants.
The delivery was made possible by a prior agreement between Germany and the U.S. manufacturer, which ensures Berlin’s own military stocks will be replenished quickly. This mechanism has been crucial, given the global scarcity and the long production timelines for the advanced systems.
President Zelenskyy has persistently pleaded with Western partners for more Patriots, acknowledging that while the German delivery is vital, production limitations worldwide and the necessity for allies to maintain their own stockpiles have slowed the pace of delivery. Kyiv views the continued reinforcement of its air defenses as essential to stabilizing the front lines and protecting civilian life.
