New Poseidon-Equipped Vessel Rolled Out in Severodvinsk, Heralded as ‘Significant’ Naval Milestone
SEVERODVINSK, Russia: Russia officially launched its newest nuclear submarine, the ‘Khabarovsk’, yesterday, a vessel specifically designed to carry the formidable ‘Poseidon’ nuclear-powered underwater drone, which analysts have dubbed the “doomsday missile.”
The launch ceremony took place at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, marking a major advancement in Moscow’s strategic underwater capabilities.
Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov oversaw the event, calling the rollout a “significant moment for Russia’s navy.” He was joined by Russian Naval Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev and other top shipbuilding officials.
The ‘Khabarovsk’ is part of a new class of submarines intended to be the primary carriers for the Poseidon system. The underwater nuclear drone is capable of intercontinental travel and reportedly possesses immense destructive power, with some Russian officials claiming it is capable of wiping out coastal nations.
The launch of the submarine follows recent announcements by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the successful test of the Poseidon drone, emphasizing that the weapon’s speed and operational depth make it virtually impossible to intercept. The new submarine is expected to undergo a series of sea trials before being commissioned for active duty.
