TAIPEI: Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) has reported a significant increase in Chinese military activity around its territory, highlighting persistent pressure from Beijing.
By 11:30 am IST, the MND detected five People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft sorties and eight People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels operating near the island. Notably, three of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s eastern and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).
This activity followed an earlier report the same day detailing the presence of five PLA aircraft and six PLAN vessels, also involving incursions into Taiwan’s ADIZ. The MND confirmed that Taiwan’s armed forces had monitored the situation and responded appropriately to the manoeuvres.
Amid these growing military threats, Taiwan is pushing forward with comprehensive reforms to its military and national security framework. This effort is guided by President William Lai’s 17-point strategy, aimed at countering Chinese infiltration and influence. To solidify the nation’s resilience, the Executive Yuan has identified 120 key tasks and plans to amend or introduce 21 new laws to strengthen economic, cybersecurity, and defence capabilities against China’s expanding assertiveness.
