India Applauds Trump’s ‘Instrumental’ Role in Gaza Peace Agreement
UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK: India has strongly lauded the role of US President Donald Trump in achieving the landmark Gaza agreement, stating the pact has created significant momentum for peace in the region. Participating in a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate on West Asia, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, expressed the country’s appreciation for the United States’ landmark initiative. “India would also like to place on record its appreciation for the United States, and especially President Donald Trump, for playing an instrumental role in forging the agreement,” stated Mr. Harish.
The Indian envoy noted that the initiative has generated diplomatic momentum towards peace, and stressed that “all parties must adhere to their obligations in this regard.” India’s participation in the peace process was highlighted by its attendance at the Gaza Peace Summit at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 13. The country welcomed the signing of the landmark pact at the summit.
Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to the signing ceremony, India was represented by External Affairs Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh. In addition to the US role, Mr. Harish also commended the key mediating nations for their efforts in bringing the deal to fruition. He specifically praised Egypt and Qatar for their roles as intermediaries in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, acknowledging their success in “getting the peace agreement through.”
