Russia Rejects Freezing Ukraine Frontline, Citing ‘Well Known’ Maximalist Stance

MOSCOW, RUSSIA:The Kremlin on Monday asserted that its position on territorial demands in Ukraine remains unchanged, firmly rejecting speculation that Moscow might be willing to scale back its terms for a possible ceasefire to end the ongoing war.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the matter when questioned about proposals allegedly put forth by U.S. President Donald Trump, which included freezing the offensive along the current frontlines in Ukraine.
“The Russian side answered every time, this answer is well known: the consistency of Russia’s position doesn’t change,” Peskov told reporters on Monday.
The spokesperson’s comments underscore the Russian leadership’s consistent rejection of freezing the war along the current contact line, a proposal that has been a topic of repeated discussion in high-level contacts.
Moscow has previously rejected such proposals, historically putting forward what have been described as “unrealistic maximalist demands” for any peace settlement. Peskov noted that the issue of freezing the offensive was “repeatedly raised in various forms during contacts between Russia and the US,” with Russia’s response remaining firm.
This public confirmation of Russia’s unwavering stance follows a period of renewed diplomatic efforts and heightened international attention on potential peace pathways, notably following a recent meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Moscow continues to insist that negotiations for a final peace settlement, based on its long-held demands, must come before any ceasefire.
