Russia Calls for ‘Unbiased’ UN Approach on Ukraine and Middle East

MOSCOW – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a detailed meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, focusing on the crises in Ukraine and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone, along with the future reform of the global organization.

The discussions, confirmed by the Russian Foreign Ministry, centered on the most pressing international problems, reflecting the acute global tensions that dominated the UN session.

A significant point raised by the Russian side was the principle of impartiality within the UN Secretariat. Minister Lavrov “underscored the importance of the UN Secretariat’s ‘unbiased and equidistant approach’ to the subject,” according to the Ministry’s statement.

This emphasis on neutrality was directly linked to Article 100 of the UN Charter, which stipulates that the Secretary-General and UN staff must not seek or receive instructions from any government and must remain independent international officials.

Despite the differences in views on the major conflicts, the two sides concluded by expressing a firm commitment to strengthen cooperation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Moscow continues to underscore its commitment to the global organization’s central coordinating role in world affairs, as well as to the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety.
