SHIMLA — Himachal Pradesh is grappling with the devastating effects of the ongoing monsoon season as continuous heavy rains trigger widespread landslides and disrupt normal life. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the districts of Kangra, Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu today, forecasting an escalation of the crisis.
The relentless downpour has led to tragic consequences. In the Jungam Bagh area of Sundernagar subdivision in Mandi district, a massive landslide occurred Tuesday evening, burying two houses and claiming the lives of six people, including a three-year-old child. Rescue operations are still underway by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police, who are working tirelessly to clear the debris and locate a person who remains missing.
Infrastructure Paralysis and Public Disruption
The heavy rains have crippled the state’s infrastructure, with four national highways and 1,334 roads currently blocked by landslides, cutting off key transit routes and isolating remote areas. Furthermore, the State Emergency Operation Centre reports that more than 2,180 electricity transformers and 777 drinking water schemes are out of order, leaving thousands of residents without power and water.
In response to the weather department’s severe warning, educational institutions in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Solan, and Shimla have been ordered to remain closed today to ensure the safety of students and staff. Authorities are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on official advisories as the situation remains precarious. ATP
