BEIJING — China has extended a welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is set to visit the country to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the summit will be “a gathering of solidarity and friendship,” with participation from over 20 countries and 10 international organizations, reports said.
This will be PM Modi’s first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which severely strained bilateral relations. While the two leaders last met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024, this will be their first formal meeting in seven years.
The SCO Summit, which will be the largest since the organization’s inception, serves as a key platform for member states to discuss regional security, economic cooperation, and geopolitical issues. The visit comes amid heightened trade tensions between India and the United States, as well as ongoing efforts by both India and China to normalize relations.
