Son Demands Immediate Access After Unverified Death Reports Surface
RAWALPINDI: Intense speculation surrounding the well-being of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has escalated following unverified Afghan media reports claiming his death while in custody at Adiala Jail. Although jail authorities have since refuted the claims, stating Khan is “fully healthy,” the secrecy surrounding his detention has prompted a public demand for immediate access and “proof of life.”
Khan’s son, Kasim Khan, posted a scathing appeal on X yesterday, stating that his father has been imprisoned for 845 days. Kasim alleged that for the last six weeks, the former Prime Minister has been held in a “death cell” in solitary confinement with an “absolute blackout” on communication.
“His sisters have been barred from every meeting, despite clear court orders. There have been no phone calls, no meetings and no proof of life,” Kasim wrote, arguing that this level of secrecy is a deliberate attempt to hide his father’s condition and block family contact. He called the isolation “inhumane,” urging global leaders, international courts, and human rights organizations to intervene and enforce court-ordered access. Khan’s sister also emphasized that following judicial directives would instantly resolve the situation.
Khan has been in custody since August 2023, facing multiple legal challenges, which he insists are politically motivated. Earlier this year, Khan and his wife were convicted in a corruption case, receiving 14-year and seven-year sentences, respectively. The renewed crisis of confidence in his status comes amid his party’s previous claims that he was being held in a death cell under solitary confinement.
