Bucharest Calls Breach Near Ukraine Border a ‘Russian Provocation’; Pilots Hold Fire
BUCHAREST: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) fighter jets from Romania and Germany were scrambled today after an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) penetrated Romanian airspace deeper than any previous incident near the Ukrainian border. Bucharest immediately described the violation as a “Russian provocation.”
The incursion—the thirteenth reported breach of Romanian airspace since Russia’s 2022 full-scale war began, and the first to occur in daylight—followed overnight Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports across the Danube River.
Defence officials confirmed that the NATO pilots came close to opening fire on the drone but held back to prevent potential collateral damage on the ground in the NATO member state. Non-explosive drone fragments were later recovered in Romania, confirming the breach.
The incident involved multiple NATO assets. German Eurofighters initially tracked the drone in the southeastern county of Tulcea before it re-entered Ukrainian airspace. Separately, Romanian F-16s responded to a second airspace breach that was heading toward the inland county of Vrancea.
As tensions sharply intensified along NATO’s eastern flank, residents in three Romanian border counties were briefly instructed to take cover via the public emergency alert system.
