Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail on Track to Cut Travel Time to Two Hours
SURAT: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Gujarat tomorrow, November 15, to personally inspect the progress of the ambitious Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), popularly known as the Bullet Train project. The visit, set for around 10 AM, will focus on the under-construction Bullet Train Station in Surat, marking a critical review of one of India’s most significant infrastructure endeavors.
The MAHSR project is poised to revolutionize inter-city travel, aiming to connect India’s financial hub, Mumbai, with Ahmedabad in approximately two hours, a fraction of the current travel time.
The corridor spans approximately 508 kilometres, with 352 km passing through Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra.
The route will link major economic centres, including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai.
The project utilizes advanced engineering techniques, with about 85% of the route (465 km) being constructed on viaducts to minimize environmental impact and maximize safety.
Significant construction milestones have already been achieved. So far, 326 km of viaduct work has been completed, and 17 out of 25 river bridges have been constructed.
The Surat–Bilimora section (around 47 km) is reported to be in an advanced stage, with civil works and track-bed laying fully completed.
The design of the Surat station is particularly noteworthy, drawing inspiration from the city’s famed diamond industry, blending elegance with modern functionality. It is being built with a strong focus on passenger experience, featuring spacious lounges, retail outlets, and multi-modal connectivity. The station will seamlessly integrate with the Surat Metro, local city buses, and the existing Indian Railways network, establishing a major transport hub.
Upon completion, the Bullet Train is expected to generate far-reaching economic benefits. Beyond reducing travel time and enhancing comfort, the corridor is anticipated to be a major catalyst for regional development, providing a substantial boost to business, tourism, and overall economic activity along its entire path.
The Prime Minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to delivering this project, which symbolizes India’s leap into the era of high-speed connectivity and world-class transportation infrastructure.
