Humanitarian Aid Plummets as Winter Nears, Leaving Millions Vulnerable to Malnutrition
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN:The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a dire warning that Afghan women are witnessing their children die from severe malnutrition, a crisis exacerbated by a sharp decline in humanitarian funding and the fast approach of winter. The WFP described the overall situation, particularly among women and children, as “deeply alarming.”
John Aylieff, WFP’s Country Director in Afghanistan, stressed that many families have been cut off from vital aid and are struggling merely to survive.
“Now is not the time to scale back assistance,” Aylieff said on Tuesday, urging the international community to uphold promises of solidarity and increase support as winter sets in, which will dramatically worsen inadequate food access.
