Trump Denounces Winner, Threatens Federal Funding
NEW YORK: Democrat Zohran Mamdani has secured a historic victory in the New York City mayoral race, defeating independent candidate and former Governor Andrew Cuomo today. With this win, Mamdani is set to become the city’s first Muslim mayor and, at age 34, its youngest mayor in over a century, marking a significant shift in the city’s political landscape.
Mamdani, who ran a grassroots campaign on a progressive platform centered on issues of affordability, defeated Cuomo for the second time, after first toppling him in the Democratic primary in June. The Mayor-elect will officially take office on January 1, 2026.
Mamdani’s victory comes despite intense national scrutiny and direct attacks from US President Donald Trump.
On the eve of voting, President Trump denounced Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, as a “Communist candidate” on a social media platform. The President also issued a stark warning that federal funding for New York City could be drastically reduced if Mamdani were elected.
President Trump wrote that it is “highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required,” to the city, due to his conviction that a “Communist at the helm” would lead the city to a “Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster.”
The President had previously urged voters to support Cuomo, despite their past political tensions, arguing that New Yorkers “really have no choice” but to vote for the independent to block Mamdani’s progressive agenda.
Mamdani’s campaign was fueled by a coalition of young voters and working-class New Yorkers, galvanized by his promises to implement rent freezes, establish fare-free buses, and set up city-owned grocery stores to combat rising costs.
His victory is viewed as a major triumph for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and ushers in a new era of leadership for America’s largest city.
