Russia Claims Successful Test of ‘Unique’ Burevestnik Nuclear Missile

Putin Hails Burevestnik Cruise Missile as ‘Unlike Any Other in the World’ After 14,000km Test Flight

MOSCOW, RUSSIA: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country’s defense forces have successfully tested the Burevestnik nuclear missile, a weapon he described as a “unique product, unlike any other in the world.”

The announcement, which follows years of development and testing, is part of a broader nuclear messaging effort by the Kremlin amid ongoing tensions over the conflict in Ukraine and warnings to NATO allies against deep strikes into Russian territory.

Valery Gerasimov, Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, reported that the Burevestnik missile achieved an extraordinary performance during its recent test. The missile stayed in the air for about 15 hours and covered a distance of 14,000 kilometers, with Gerasimov noting that “this is not the attainable limit.” The missile’s key feature is its nuclear power unit, which Western observers believe gives it a virtually unlimited range and extended loiter capability, a notion acknowledged by the Pentagon.

Putin specifically highlighted the missile’s uniqueness, recalling that even “highly qualified specialists” had once deemed the weapon unachievable in the near future. The Pentagon has acknowledged that the Burevestnik is capable of launching attacks from virtually any carrier “thanks to its extraordinary range and autonomy.”

The development of the Burevestnik missile, which translates to “storm petrel,” reportedly began after the U.S. withdrew from the 1972 Ballistic Missile Treaty in December 2001.

The Russian Defence Ministry stressed that the creation of this new strategic weapon system is aimed at improving the defense capability and preventing any aggression against Russia and its allies. The missile is intended to bolster Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces, which Putin claims are now “at the highest level.”
