Alternative Headline: Border Conflict Ends as Cambodia, Thailand Sign Ceasefire at ASEAN Summit
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA : In a diplomatic coup, U.S. President Donald Trump presided over the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia at the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur, a deal he heralded as “historic.”
The agreement aims to resolve border disputes that led to skirmishes last year. As part of the first phase of the deal, Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners, and Cambodia will begin withdrawing heavy artillery from the disputed border areas. Regional observers are set to monitor the situation to ensure a lasting peace.
“We did something that a lot of people said couldn’t be done,” President Trump stated at the ceremony, his first event after arriving in the Malaysian capital.
The agreement was warmly welcomed by both sides. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called it a “historic day,” while Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the agreement creates “the building blocks for a lasting peace.”
The signing ceremony provided an opportunity for President Trump to position himself as a major international dealmaker. The trip, which will include visits to Japan and South Korea, and a potential meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, comes as the President faces economic and domestic political challenges back home.
In addition to the peace accord, President Trump signed economic agreements with Cambodia, Thailand, and the host nation, Malaysia. Several of these deals are focused on increasing trade involving critical minerals, as the U.S. seeks to diversify its supply chains and reduce reliance on China for key components in technology manufacturing.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized the importance of these arrangements, stating, “It’s very important that we cooperate as willing partners with each other to ensure that we can have smooth supply chains, secure supply chains, for the quality of life, for our people and security.”
