INDIA Bloc Picks Tejashwi Yadav as CM Face for Bihar Polls; Mukesh Sahani Named Deputy CM Candidate

Opposition Unity: Tejashwi Yadav to Lead INDIA Bloc Challenge in Bihar Assembly Elections

Bihar: Ending weeks of intense speculation and rumours of internal rifts, the INDIA bloc on Thursday, 23 October, officially declared former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial face for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections in November.

The pivotal announcement was made by senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, who asserted that the decision was reached with the “consensus of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition [in the Lok Sabha] Rahul Gandhi, and all alliance partners.”

“Tejashwi Yadav-ji has a long political journey, and we are confident the people of Bihar will shower him with immense love,” Gehlot stated during the press briefing.

In a move aimed at projecting a strong caste combination, the alliance also named Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani as a deputy chief ministerial face. Gehlot added that “One more deputy CM candidate will be announced later.” Both the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the VIP had been actively pushing for Yadav and Sahani to be projected as the CM and deputy CM candidates, respectively. The announcement of the chief ministerial face and his deputy is widely seen as a strategic attempt to consolidate the bloc’s crucial OBC–Dalit–minority base ahead of the polls.

Taking a direct swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gehlot challenged the rival coalition, saying, “We have declared our chief ministerial face — now Amit Shah-ji should tell the people who will be NDA’s CM candidate.”

Visibly emotional yet assertive, Tejashwi Yadav expressed profound gratitude to all the alliance partners for placing their trust in him. “We, the people of the Mahagathbandhan, do not just want to form a government or become chief minister — we want to build a better Bihar,” he said. “I thank all the members of the alliance for showing trust in me. I will do everything possible to live up to your expectations, and together we will end this 20-year-old government.”
