Diplomatic Footprint Expanded: India Upgrades Kabul Technical Mission Following Afghan FM Visit
NEW DELHI: India formally upgraded its diplomatic presence in Kabul from a technical mission to the status of a full-fledged Embassy of India in Afghanistan on Tuesday, marking a significant step to deepen bilateral engagement with Kabul.
The decision follows the recent visit of Afghan foreign minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi to New Delhi in early October, during which External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar signaled India’s intention to enhance its diplomatic footprint.
India had initially withdrawn its officials from the Kabul embassy following the Taliban takeover in August 2021. After a hiatus, a limited diplomatic presence was re-established in June 2022 with the deployment of a technical team headed by a mid-ranking diplomat.
The elevation of this mission to full embassy status communicates India’s resolve to engage more comprehensively with the Afghan side. The full embassy will focus on expanding India’s contributions to Afghanistan in key areas, including development, humanitarian assistance, and capacity-building initiatives that align with Afghan societal priorities.
