RAMALLAH/GENEVA – The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the occupied Palestinian territory has strongly condemned the recent detention of a five- and a six-year-old Palestinian child by Israeli forces in Hebron, calling the incident a stark demonstration of “the cruel daily realities on the ground for Palestinians.”

The incident, which occurred on Monday, saw Israeli soldiers filmed detaining the two young children in the occupied West Bank city. When a bystander intervened and pleaded for their release, a soldier was recorded replying: “I don’t care.”

The UN human rights office issued a forceful statement, noting that “Every day, children are killed, injured or arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces.” The office reiterated its call for immediate accountability for such actions, a complete end to the Israeli occupation, and the ultimate implementation of a two-state solution.

The condemnation comes as the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip deepens, with a significant rise in starvation deaths.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the total number of people who have died from starvation in the enclave has now reached 453, including 150 children. This grim figure includes 175 people, including 35 children, who have died of starvation since famine was officially declared in Gaza last month.
