KARUR (TAMIL NADU): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, accompanied by Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan, arrived in Karur this morning to meet the bereaved families and visit those injured in the devastating stampede that occurred during a public event over the weekend.
The death toll from the tragic incident has risen to 41 today, as more victims succumbed to their injuries. Officials confirmed that over 80 people are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in the region.
Ms. Sitharaman and Dr. Murugan arrived at Coimbatore International Airport before proceeding by road to Karur to assess the situation and offer condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. The Finance Minister is scheduled to visit those receiving treatment at different hospitals to inquire about their condition and ensure they are receiving adequate care.
The stampede, which took place during a rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay, has prompted a state-level inquiry and calls for stricter crowd management norms at large public gatherings. The visit by the Union Ministers underscores the central government’s commitment to the victims of the tragedy.
