PM Modi and Greek PM Mitsotakis Discuss Trade, Defense, and Global Issues in Phone Call
NEW DELHI – In a significant step to deepen bilateral ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, held a telephonic conversation on Friday, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the India-Greece Strategic Partnership.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral relations across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, shipping, defense, security, and people-to-people ties. The conversation also included an exchange of views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The Strategic Partnership between India and Greece was elevated during PM Modi’s historic visit to Greece in August 2023, and further solidified during PM Mitsotakis’s state visit to India in February 2024—the first such visit by a Greek leader in 15 years. These high-level exchanges have laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in multiple areas.
A key point of discussion during the call was the ongoing negotiations for the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA). In a show of support, Prime Minister Mitsotakis conveyed Greece’s backing for the early conclusion of a “mutually beneficial” FTA. This comes as the EU and India are intensifying efforts to finalize the long-discussed pact, with recent rounds of negotiations showing significant progress. As reported by news agency IANS, PM Mitsotakis’s support is seen as a positive signal from a key EU member state.
Furthermore, the Greek Prime Minister conveyed his support for the success of the upcoming AI Impact Summit, which India is scheduled to host in 2026. The summit is poised to be a major global platform for discussing the future of Artificial Intelligence, with a focus on its role in inclusive development and the need for a global governance framework. India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recently unveiled the official logo and flagship initiatives for the event, which is set to bring together global leaders, innovators, and policymakers.
