NEW DELHI— Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart for a two-nation visit to Japan and China this evening, starting with the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in Japan. This marks his eighth visit to Japan and the first summit with his new counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
During the summit, the two leaders are expected to review the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between their nations, focusing on key areas such as defence, security, trade, economy, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. The talks will also cover important regional and global issues, reinforcing the long-standing friendship between India and Japan.
In the second leg of his visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The visit comes at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On the sidelines of the SCO Summit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several attending leaders. This visit to China is especially significant as it is his first in over seven years, and he is expected to have a meeting with President Xi Jinping. India has been a full member of the SCO since 2017 and held the presidency of the Council of Heads of State from 2022 to 2023. ATP
