NEW DELHI — Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have been adjourned sine die, marking the end of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on July 21. The session was largely marked by frequent disruptions, leading to a significant loss of legislative time.
Lok Sabha’s Disrupted Session: In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla expressed his displeasure with the session’s limited productivity. He noted that while 14 government bills were introduced and 12 were passed, the House only managed to function for a total of 37 hours.
Birla stated that out of 419 starred questions listed for oral replies, only 55 could be taken up due to “continuous pre-planned disruptions.” He also criticized the language and behavior of some members, stating it was not in line with parliamentary dignity.
Despite the disruptions, the Lok Sabha did hold a special two-day discussion on Operation Sindoor, which concluded with a reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another special discussion was also initiated on the achievements of India’s space program.
Rajya Sabha’s Low Productivity: In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman Harivansh noted that the house functioned for only 41 hours and 15 minutes, with a productivity rate of just 38.8 percent. He also expressed displeasure over the disruptions, which included opposition protests over the issue of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral roll in Bihar.
During the session, the Rajya Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. It also referred several key bills, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further scrutiny before being adjourned sine die.
