Baramulla : The Dryland Agriculture Research Station (DARS), Rangreth, organized an Awareness-cum-Capacity Building Programme titled “Impact of Weeds on Agriculture, Human Health, and Ecosystems” at the Faculty of Agriculture, Wadoora, Sopore.
The event, conducted under the aegis of the Indian Society of Weed Sciences, Jabalpur, was aimed at students and field functionaries of the faculty.
Expert speakers detailed how weeds aggressively compete with crops for essential resources such as nutrients, water, and sunlight. The programme also raised awareness about the primary mechanisms through which weeds contribute to significant reductions in crop yield and broader ecological damage.
In his address, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, SKAUST-Kashmir, Wadoora, Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Mir, stated, “Weeds interfere with critical agricultural operations like harvesting and irrigation, leading to yield losses. Effective weed management is crucial for supporting farmers on a larger scale.”
The session featured contributions from several prominent figures, including Dr. Fayaz Ahmed Bahar, Professor-cum-Chief Scientist, DARS, Budgam; Prof. Bashir Ahmad Alie, Head, Division of Agronomy, FOA, Wadura; Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, Associate Director Research, DARS, Budgam; and Prof. Mohammad Anwar Bhat, Associate Director Education, IE Cell, SKUAST-Kashmir, Shalimar.
The occasion also saw the release of a relevant publication, and certificates were distributed to the participants.
