Teen Sensations Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda Shine as India Assures All-Indian Men’s Singles Final Spot
LUCKNOW:Indian shuttlers put up a commanding performance at the Syed Modi International Badminton Tournament yesterday, with Kidambi Srikanth, Tanvi Sharma, and Unnati Hooda leading a strong contingent into the semifinals.
In the women’s singles, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive run, defeating Hong Kong’s Sin Yan Happy Lo 21-13, 21-19 to secure her spot in the final four. She is set to face fifth seed Hina Akechi of Japan next. Compatriot Unnati Hooda also advanced after a tough three-game battle against Rakshitha Ramraj, prevailing 21-15, 13-21, 21-16. Hooda will take on the fourth seed, Neslihan Arin of Turkey.
The men’s singles draw guarantees an Indian finalist after an all-Indian semifinal was set up. Kidambi Srikanth progressed when his opponent, Priyanshu Rajawat, retired with the score at 21-14, 11-4 in Srikanth’s favour. He will face Mithun Manjunath, who beat Manraj Singh 21-18, 21-13.
In doubles action, top-seeded women’s pair Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly comfortably eased past Turkish pair Bengisu Ercetin and Nazlican Inci 21-15, 21-16 to book their semifinal spot. Treesa Jolly also advanced in mixed doubles with partner Hariharan Amsakarunan, defeating Australia’s Andika Ramadiansyah and Nozomi Shimizu 21-18, 21-14.
