PSV Eindhoven Thrash Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield, Extending Reds’ Worst Form Since 1953
Liverpool’s dismal season plumbed new depths on Wednesday as they suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League, extending the club’s worst run of form in 71 years. The humiliating loss marked their ninth defeat in 12 games across all competitions, a sequence of results last seen during the 1953–54 relegation season, and compounds the pressure on manager Arne Slot.
The game began poorly for the Reds when captain Virgil van Dijk conceded an early penalty for handball in the 6th minute, which Ivan Perisic calmly converted. Liverpool found a quick equaliser ten minutes later when Dominik Szoboszlai tapped in a rebound after a shot from Cody Gakpo was fumbled by PSV keeper Matej Kovar.
However, the second half saw a complete capitulation. Guus Til restored PSV’s lead in the 37th minute. The home team’s woes deepened when substitute Couhaib Driouech pounced on a rebound to make it 3-1, before sealing his brace in stoppage time with a finish from a swift counter-attack.
The result leaves Liverpool struggling in the Champions League group table and intensifies the scrutiny on Slot, who must urgently address the team’s defensive frailties and lack of confidence. The Reds will now seek to salvage some pride in their next fixture, a Premier League trip to West Ham United on November 30.
