J&K Rajya Sabha MPs to Take Oath on Dec -1

National Conference Trio to Restore Jammu and Kashmir’s Representation in Upper House

NEW DELHI: Three recently elected Rajya Sabha members from the National Conference (NC) — Shammi Oberoi, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, and Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan — are scheduled to take their oath on December 1, marking the opening day of the Parliament’s Winter Session.

The oath will be administered by Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan. This ceremony will officially end a nearly five-year gap in Rajya Sabha representation for Jammu and Kashmir, whose seats had been vacant since the previous members completed their terms in February 2021. The vacancy arose due to the absence of an elected legislative assembly in J&K, which is required for Upper House elections under the Constitution.

The three leaders were elected last month in the first Rajya Sabha polls held in the Union Territory since the reorganization of the erstwhile state and the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The NC secured three of the four seats, while the BJP won one, with its candidate Sat Sharma having already taken the oath. The new MPs, including former ministers Kichloo and Ramzan, and party treasurer Oberoi, are set to participate immediately in the legislative work of the Winter Session.
