CAIRO, Egypt: Olympian Gurpreet Singh secured the silver medal in the men’s 25m Centre Fire Pistol event at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Championships held in Cairo, concluding India’s campaign with a strong performance.
Gurpreet lost out on the gold medal to Pavlo Korostylov of Ukraine on the tie-breaking rule of inner 10s, after both shooters finished with an identical total score of 584. Korostylov secured the top spot by registering 29 inner 10s, against Gurpreet’s 18.
Tie-breaker: The score of inner 10s refers to the number of shots that land within the innermost circle of the 10-ring on the target, which is used to break ties when the total scores are equal.
This marks Gurpreet’s second individual medal at the World Championships. His first was also a silver, won in the 25m Standard Pistol event back in 2018 at Changwon. The Indian shooter showed remarkable resilience in the final, bouncing back after being placed ninth following the precision stage to shoot a brilliant score in the rapid stage.
India wrapped up its World Championship campaign in third place in the medal tally. The contingent secured a total of 13 medals, which included: Three (3) Gold, Six (6) Silver, Four (4) Bronze.
India finished behind the table toppers, China, and South Korea (Republic of Korea) in the overall medal standings.
