Blackcaps End 15-Year Wait for Home Series Victory Over England
HAMILTON: New Zealand wrapped up the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series 2-0 against England with a commanding victory at Seddon Park on Tuesday, easily chasing down a modest 176-run target to complete their first home series win over the rivals since 2008.
England’s batting struggles continued as they were bowled out for just 175, with Blair Tickner leading a collective Blackcaps bowling effort by claiming a four-wicket haul (4/42). The home side then comfortably reached the target, anchored by composed half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra.
After a brief rain interruption, the visiting top order once again crumbled, slipping to 105 for 6. Pacemen Jacob Duffy and Zakary Foulkes—who had a four-wicket haul in the first match—removed Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith cheaply. Joe Root showed promise before falling to the impressive Tickner, who replaced Matt Henry in the playing XI.
A stunning one-handed catch by Will Young at backward point ended Harry Brook’s brief, aggressive stay, and Nathan Smith swiftly removed Jacob Bethell and skipper Jos Buttler in quick succession.
A 38-run partnership, the best of the innings, between Jamie Overton and Sam Curran offered some resistance. Overton played aggressively but Tickner finished off the tail to complete the tourists’ collapse. Every one of New Zealand’s six bowlers contributed at least one wicket.
In the chase, England’s Jofra Archer, playing his first ODI against the Kiwis since the 2019 World Cup final, provided an early breakthrough by trapping Will Young leg-before in the opening over. He finished with an impressive spell of 3-23.
Ravindra (50) and Kane Williamson steadied the innings before Williamson chopped one onto his stumps off Jamie Overton. Ravindra reached his half-century before falling to Archer, and New Zealand briefly slipped to 118 for 5, giving England a flicker of hope.
However, Daryl Mitchell (56 not out), with his second consecutive fifty, and Mitchell Santner (34 off 17 balls) sealed the victory emphatically with a brisk 59-run partnership off just 31 balls. Santner smashed the winning boundary, securing a memorable win and a historic home series triumph for New Zealand.
