Hammers Crisis Deepens: Brentford Victory Plunges West Ham to Second-Bottom, Fans Stage Boycott
LONDON: West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo delivered a stark assessment of his team’s plight, admitting the club “have a problem” following a dispiriting 2-0 home defeat to Brentford on Monday night. The result, which saw the Hammers lose their opening four home Premier League games for the first time in their history, leaves the London club precariously placed in the second-bottom spot on the table.
Goals from striker Igor Thiago and midfielder Mathias Jensen secured Brentford’s first away victory of the season, deepening the crisis surrounding the London Stadium. The tense atmosphere was compounded by a planned fan boycott, a move orchestrated by supporters’ groups to protest against the club’s board and the team’s poor run of form.
Speaking candidly after the match, the former Nottingham Forest coach acknowledged the toxic mood both on and off the pitch.
“I think we are all concerned. You can see our own fans are concerned. Concern becomes anxiety, becomes silence. We have a problem,” Nuno stated.
The Portuguese coach stressed that the onus is now on the players to reverse their fortunes and win back the trust of the frustrated fanbase.
“It’s understandable. It’s up to us to change. The fans need to see something that pleases them so they can support us and give us energy. I understand it, I understand it totally, and I respect it. It’s up to us to change it,” he added.
Brentford opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after a lapse in the West Ham defence. A poor clearance by Maximilian Kilman allowed Kevin Schade to set up Igor Thiago, whose shot beat goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Thiago later had a goal ruled out by VAR for a marginal offside, but substitute Mathias Jensen sealed the victory for the visitors in stoppage time, firing home from a Keane Lewis-Potter assist.
The defeat leaves West Ham languishing with just four points from eight Premier League matches. In contrast, the much-deserved win saw Brentford climb up the table to 13th place.
