VIRGIN, UTAH:The Red Bull Rampage, the world’s premier freeride mountain biking event in the unforgiving terrain near Zion National Park, was dramatically paused on Sunday after two athletes suffered horrific crashes and required helicopter evacuation to a nearby hospital.
The incidents involved Spanish rider Adolf Silva and Swedish competitor Emil Johansson, underscoring the extreme danger inherent in the high-stakes competition.
The first major incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. during Adolf Silva’s second run. The Spaniard was attempting a daunting double backflip off a steep step-down feature when he crashed partway through the rotation. He under-rotated, landing hard on his front wheel before pitching over the handlebars, hitting his head, and tumbling down the rocky slope.
Medical teams rushed to the scene to stabilize the 28-year-old rider. He was loaded onto a stretcher and airlifted out of the remote venue. Red Bull USA later confirmed he was “alert, conscious and talking to his loved ones” shortly after his transfer.
On Monday evening, Silva provided an update to his followers, confirming a “lower back injury” but expressing gratitude for the support. “It’s great to have my family here and feel all the support from all of you guys,” his post read.
Moments after the competition resumed following Silva’s evacuation, disaster struck again when Swedish rider Emil Johansson crashed during his own second run.
Johansson, a decorated slopestyle champion, lost control after attempting a tailwhip early in his run, sending him tumbling down a sheer cliff face. The difficult and inaccessible position on the ridge line forced the competition to halt again while medical crews completed a complex extraction to airlift him to the hospital.
The 26-year-old also updated fans on Monday with details of his injury. “I suffered a big dislocation of my right hip that they managed to pop back in at the hospital… but will most likely need to get surgery on it to clean the socket up from pieces of bone,” Johansson wrote on social media. He added a note of relief, saying, “Besides that I am pretty much unscratched!”
The back-to-back incidents cast a shadow over the competition, once again fueling debate about the acceptable risks at the iconic Red Bull Rampage event.
