DC Bandipora attends Grand Finale of Maj Gopi Singh Rathore

BANDIPORA: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, on Monday attended the thrilling grand finale of the Maj Gopi Singh Rathore, Shaurya Chakra Memorial North Kashmir Football Premier League at Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium, Bandipora.
The tournament, organized by the Indian Army, culminated with Meethu FC emerging victorious over Hyderbeigh FC with a 3-1 scoreline in a gripping contest.
The Deputy Commissioner congratulated both the finalists for showcasing exceptional talent and sportsmanship and lauded the efforts of the Indian Army and all supporting agencies for providing a platform that promotes youth engagement, unity, and peace through sports. She emphasized that such events play a vital role in channelizing the energy of youth in a positive direction and strengthening the spirit of togetherness in the Valley.
The month-long tournament witnessed participation from over 60 teams across North Kashmir, reflecting the region’s enduring passion for football and its commitment to nurturing sports culture.
The league was dedicated to the memory of Major Gopi Singh Rathore, Shaurya Chakra, an officer of the Garhwal Rifles who made the supreme sacrifice in Bandipora on November 10, 2005, after displaying exceptional bravery in close combat. Major Rathore, who had also served as Aide-de-Camp to former Presidents K.R. Narayanan and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, continues to inspire youth towards courage, leadership, and service.
The closing ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Indian Army, BSF, JK Police, CRPF, CISF, and officials from the Civil Administration, besides prominent sports personalities, civil society members, and enthusiastic youth from across North Kashmir.
The DC Bandipora appreciated the collaborative efforts behind the successful conduct of the event and reiterated the administration’s commitment to continue promoting sports and cultural activities for youth empowerment and community harmony in the district.
