JAMMU: Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Rakesh Minhas, today announced a regulatory framework for the operation of e-rickshaws, e-autos and e-carts within district Jammu.
The announcement followed a District Road Traffic Authority meeting chaired by the DC with SSP Joginder Singh, SSP Traffic Farooq Qaiser, RTO Jasmeet Singh and representatives from transport unions in which all decisions were made after amicable agreement.
Under the new framework, all electric vehicles must operate strictly within designated zones, with movement between zones prohibited. Vehicles will display colour-coded plates on the front and rear for easy identification. The zones classified are Zone 1 (South Jammu) – Pink; Zone 2 (North Jammu) – Blue; Zone 3 (Akhnoor) – Yellow; Zone 4 (R.S. Pura) – Red; Zone 5 (Marh) – Green; Zone 6 (Nagrota) – Black.
The E-rickshaws, e-autos and e-carts are barred from flyovers, national highways and state highways within district limits. Seven designated crossings, including Amphalla Hospital, Bakshi Nagar, KC Theatre, Hotel Asia, Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground, Marble Market and Kunjwani, will facilitate regulated inter-zone movement.
Vehicles registered outside the district are prohibited from operating within Jammu and joint enforcement teams comprising Traffic Police, RTO and Tehsildars will monitor compliance, curb overcharging and prevent unauthorised operations.
The order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, aims to ensure safe, disciplined and efficient traffic movement, addressing issues of unregulated operations, route indiscipline and overcharging by operators.
The order will take effect from October 23, 2025, initially for three months, after which it will be reviewed based on compliance and feedback. Dr. Minhas urged stakeholders to cooperate with the administration to ensure commuter safety and smooth traffic flow.
