Jammu: Acting swiftly on consumer complaints, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology Enforcement Jammu has booked three traders for indulging in overcharging and short weighment. The action was taken under the direct supervision of Controller Legal Metrology, Rajinder Singh Tara.

In one instance, a departmental store was caught charging ₹5 extra over the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). At Jumbo Zoo, a consumer was overcharged under the false pretext of GST. In another case, a rice seller was found supplying underweight rice bags.

All three cases were registered under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and the rules framed thereunder. The Deputy Controller, Legal Metrology (Enforcement), Jammu, issued show-cause notices to the offenders, who admitted to the violations. A penalty of ₹1.31 lakh was imposed as composition money, which has been recovered. The defaulters were further warned against repeating such unfair trade practices.

Controller Rajinder Singh Tara stressed that the department has intensified its enforcement drive and officers have been directed to keep strict vigil on such malpractices. He assured that all genuine consumer complaints will be dealt with on priority to strengthen public trust and encouraged citizens to report unethical trade practices without hesitation.
