BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE– New Zealand has asserted a colossal 476-run lead over Zimbabwe on Day 2 of the second Test at the Queens Sports Club, powered by three magnificent centuries from Rachin Ravindra, Henry Nicholls, and Devon Conway. The Black Caps declared their first innings at a record-breaking 601-3, completely overwhelming the Zimbabwean bowling attack.
After resuming the day at 174-1, New Zealand’s batsmen put on a ruthless display, adding 427 runs in the day for the loss of just two wickets. Devon Conway, who had endured a lean patch in Test cricket, found his form with a commanding 153. He was eventually dismissed by Blessing Muzarabani, but not before setting a strong foundation.
The momentum was then carried forward by the unbeaten duo of Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls. Ravindra, in particular, was in blistering form, smashing an aggressive 165 not out from just 139 balls, featuring 21 fours and two sixes. Nicholls, who has been battling for a regular Test spot, capitalized on the opportunity to score his first Test hundred since 2023, grinding out a well-compiled 150 not out from 245 balls. Their explosive 256-run fourth-wicket partnership further solidified New Zealand’s commanding position.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled throughout the day, with pace bowlers Blessing Muzarabani (1-101) and Trevor Gwandu (1-131) both conceding over 100 runs. Spinners found little assistance from the slow pitch, allowing the New Zealand batsmen to score freely.
Zimbabwe were bowled out for a paltry 125 on Day 1, with Matt Henry (5-40) and debutant Zakary Foulkes (4-38) sharing nine wickets. With a massive deficit of 476 runs, Zimbabwe faces an immense challenge to save the match and avoid a 2-0 series defeat. The Black Caps are now firmly in control and will be looking to wrap up the Test swiftly on Day 3. (ATP)
