IMD forecasts light rain or snowfall from December 30, dry conditions expected after January 2

Srinagar: Minimum temperatures declined across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Saturday, with a wide spread of sub-zero readings recorded compared to the previous day.

According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) in the Kashmir region, Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 2.6°C, down from 0.2°C on Friday. Qazigund settled at minus 2.8°C, compared to 0.2°C a day earlier, while Pahalgam recorded minus 4.8°C, down from minus 1.6°C. Kupwara recorded minus 3.8°C against minus 2.4°C, and Kokernag settled at minus 0.9°C, compared to 0.8°C previously.

Gulmarg recorded minus 4.2°C, marginally higher than minus 4.5°C a day earlier. Pampore recorded minus 4.5°C, down from minus 1.6°C, while Srinagar Airport settled at minus 3.8°C against minus 1.2°C.

Sonamarg recorded minus 5.8°C, compared to minus 4.7°C on Friday.

In the Jammu region, temperatures also declined at most places. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 7.1°C, down from 10.0°C. Banihal recorded 2.8°C, compared to 3.8°C, while Batote settled at 4.6°C, down from 6.1°C.

Bhaderwah recorded 0.2°C, compared to 2.6°C a day earlier, and Rajouri settled at 1.6°C, down from 4.5°C.

Ladakh continued to record low night temperatures. Leh recorded minus 9.9°C, nearly unchanged from minus 9.8°C a day earlier, while Kargil recorded minus 9.2°C against minus 9.3°C. Nubra Valley recorded minus 8.8°C, compared to minus 6.7°C on Friday. Drass recorded minus 18.1°C.

The IMD said dense to moderate fog was observed at isolated places over the plains of Jammu division, with visibility reducing to 1200 metres at Jammu and 8000 metres at Udhampur during the morning hours.

The weather department has also forecast a change in weather conditions across J&K from December 30, with the possibility of light rain or snowfall at scattered places.

“Light rain or snow is likely at many places between December 31 and January 1, while a few higher reaches of north and central Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall during this period,” it said, adding that on January 2, light rain or snowfall is expected at a few places, followed by generally dry weather across the region from January 3 to January 9—(KNO)
