Journalist Mary Carillo Joins Federer in Hall of Fame Induction for Transcendent Impact on Sport
NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND: Tennis legend Roger Federer has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF) as the headliner for the Class of 2026, the organization announced this Wednesday. The 20-time Grand Slam champion was voted in during his first year of eligibility, capping an iconic career that redefined modern tennis.
The Swiss maestro will be officially inducted during a ceremony at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, over the weekend of August 27-29, 2026.
Federer, who retired in 2022, amassed 103 tour-level singles titles and holds the record for the most weeks ranked as World No. 1 with 310 total weeks, including an unprecedented 237 consecutive weeks.
In a statement released by the ITHF, Federer expressed his gratitude: “It’s a tremendous honour to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and to stand alongside so many of the game’s great champions. To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling. I look forward to visiting Newport next August to celebrate this special moment with the tennis community.”
Joining Federer in the Class of 2026 is acclaimed sportscaster and journalist Mary Carillo, who was elected in the Contributor Category.
Carillo is being recognized for her transcendent impact on the sport through a trailblazing media career that has spanned decades. She became the first woman to regularly commentate on tennis broadcasts, earning six Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards for her insightful analysis and storytelling across various networks and events, including 16 Olympic Games.
The Contributor Category honors individuals whose work off the court has significantly advanced the game of tennis globally.
The ITHF induction ceremony will celebrate both the competitive brilliance of Federer and the lasting influence of Carillo’s work on the tennis landscape.
