Hosts India Secure 5 Gold Medals on Day One of South Asian Athletics Championships in Ranchi
RANCHI, India: Hosts India delivered a dominant performance on the opening day of the 4th South Asian Athletics Federation (SAAF) Senior Athletics Championships yesterday, securing a total of 14 medals, including five gold, six silver, and three bronze. The championships got off to a spectacular start at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Morabadi.
India’s medal haul was highlighted by several top finishes across track and field events.
In the Men’s 5,000-metre race, India’s Prince Kumar bagged the first gold medal of the championships, clocking a time of 14:22.17 seconds. Prince finished ahead of Sri Lanka’s Vakshan Vicknaraj, who took silver, while Nepal’s Mukesh Bahadur Pal won the bronze.
The Women’s 5,000-metre race saw an Indian 1-2 finish as Sanjana Singh clinched the gold medal, closely followed by her compatriot Seema, who won the silver.
India’s flagbearer, Samardeep Singh Gill, secured gold in the Men’s Shot Put with a throw of 19.59 metres. The event was another 1-2 finish for India, as Ravi Kumar claimed the silver medal, with Sri Lanka’s Mithunraj winning bronze.
The winning streak continued in the Women’s Shot Put, where Yogita secured gold and Shiksha claimed silver. Additionally, Poorva Sawant won a silver medal in the Women’s Triple Jump. Indian sprinters rounded off the day by claiming the gold medal in the 4×400 metres mixed relay race.
