NC Alliance Sweeps J&K’s First Post-370 Rajya Sabha Polls, Secures Three Out of Four Seats
Srinagar: NC Alliance Dominates J&K’s First Post-Article 370 Rajya Sabha Polls, Securing Three Seats Comfortably.The National Conference (NC)-led alliance has demonstrated commanding strength in Jammu and Kashmir’s first Rajya Sabha elections since the abrogation of Article 370 and the region’s bifurcation into two Union Territories. The polls, which concluded peacefully today at the Srinagar Legislative Assembly complex, saw the NC alliance comfortably securing three of the four vacant seats.
The election results underscore the current legislative majority held by the NC and its allies. Of the 88 sitting MLAs, 86 cast their votes, with the detained MLA Mehraj Malik voting via postal ballot.
In a significant show of support, former Minister and National Conference candidate Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan was elected to Rajya Sabha Seat #1. He secured a decisive victory with 58 votes against the 28 votes polled for the BJP candidate.
On Seat No. 2, NC candidate Sajad Ahmad Kichloo was also declared elected, with his vote tally expected to be 57. According to reports, The third victory for the NC alliance came with the election of Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, also known as Shammi Oberoi, who secured a place in the Upper House. His victory cemented the alliance’s dominance in the polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win the fourth Rajya Sabha seat, with Sat Sharma securing the election. Mr. Sharma garnered 32 votes, which is four more than the BJP’s current legislative strength, indicating successful consolidation of support from outside the party’s own ranks for the final seat.
The results mark a crucial political moment, reflecting the current power dynamics in the region’s legislative assembly following a historic election, and will reshape Jammu and Kashmir’s representation in the Upper House of Parliament.
