Lucknow Unit Delivers First BrahMos Batch, Reinforcing ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in Record Time
LUCKNOW:Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today delivered a powerful message on national security and self-reliance, stating that “Every inch of Pakistan’s territory is now within the reach of BrahMos,” as he and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly flagged-off the first batch of BrahMos missiles manufactured at the new Integration and Testing Facility Centre in Lucknow.
The facility, a key component of the UP Defence Industrial Corridor, achieved this production milestone just five months after its virtual inauguration in May 2025.
‘Operation Sindoor’ Proves India’s Strategic Might
Speaking at the event, the Defence Minister hailed the supersonic cruise missile as more than just a weapon, describing it as a “symbol of the growing indigenous capabilities of the nation”. He highlighted the missile’s role in the recent Operation Sindoor, stating it was practical proof of national security and a demonstration of India’s strategic confidence.
“Operation Sindoor is proof that victory has become our habit; We must further enhance our capabilities,” Mr. Singh asserted, adding that the operation was “just a trailer” that had made Pakistan realise India’s potential.
He praised the BrahMos for its combination of speed, accuracy, and power, which has made it the “backbone of our Armed Forces.”
Reinforcing the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), the Defence Minister stressed the need to develop entirely indigenous technologies to secure the defense supply chain.
“We must develop all types of indigenous technologies so that our supply chain remains within India,” he stated, referring to global reports of disruptions in spare parts supply chains being used as a strategic weapon. He urged a strong project roadmap to integrate small entrepreneurs into the defence ecosystem.
The BrahMos success was cited as evidence that ‘Made-in-India’ is now a global brand. Mr. Singh revealed that the BrahMos team has signed export contracts worth approximately Rs 4,000 crore with two countries in the last month, underscoring India’s new role as a “giver, not just a taker” in defence technology.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his gratitude, noting that the BrahMos facility makes Lucknow a significant centre for production in the movement towards self-reliance. The 200-acre facility, built at a cost of Rs 380 crore, is set to produce around 100 missile systems every year.
The Defence Minister informed that the unit’s turnover is expected to be around Rs 3,000 crore from the next financial year, contributing an estimated Rs 500 crore in GST collection. He added that such projects not only strengthen national security but also significantly boost the economy, citing that the taxes collected from the production of a single missile can fund numerous social welfare schemes. The Director General of BrahMos, Dr. Jaytirth R. Joshi, symbolically presented a GST bill and a cheque of approximately Rs 40 crore to the UP Chief Minister at the event.
The Lucknow unit is the first facility in the UP Defence Industrial Corridor to manage the entire process of assembly, integration, and testing of a strategic missile system indigenously, marking Uttar Pradesh as a key partner in the national ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiative.
