Heroic Goalkeeper Sub Sends Morocco Past France, Argentina Edges Colombia for Final Spot
CAIRO — Morocco’s Under-20 national team made history on Wednesday, defeating France 5-4 on penalties to advance to their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup final. Their victory was secured by a critical save from third-string goalkeeper Abdelhakim El Mesbahi, who was substituted onto the pitch late in extra time specifically for the shootout.
The semi-final match saw Morocco take the lead in the 32nd minute through an own goal from French custodian Lisandru Olmeta. France equalised in the second half when midfielder Lucas Michel scored in the 59th minute.
With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time, Morocco’s coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, made the decisive tactical substitution, bringing in El Mesbahi for the penalty shootout. El Mesbahi repaid his coach’s faith with a match-winning stop.
In the second semi-final, Argentina also secured their place in the title match, defeating Colombia 1-0. Mateo Silvetti scored the game’s lone goal, ensuring La Albiceleste’s U20s will compete for the championship.
Argentina’s victory marks their ninth appearance in an Under-20 World Cup final.
Morocco and Argentina will now face each other in the championship final on Sunday.
