Srinagar: Police on Friday said that it has detained two thieves identified as Altaf Mushtaq Ganie S/o Mushtaq Ahmad Ganie R/o Meemander Shopian and Showkat Ahmad Wani S/o Gh Nabi R/o Astan Mohalla Arhama Shopian, under the Public Safety Act.
In a statement issued here on Friday Police said that both the accused are chronic offenders with a criminal history spanning over a decade, adding therein that a total of 12 FIRs are registered against them at Police Station Shopian. Stating that Altaf Mushtaq is involved in 7 FIRs and Showkat Ahmad in 5 different FIRs of Police Station Shopian Police in its statement further said that despite repeated arrests and legal proceedings, the said accused continued to indulge in criminal activities after being released on bail, thereby posing a constant nuisance to the public
Police in its statement further said that due to their persistent involvement in theft, burglary, intimidation, and other offences, adding therein that both the accused have been declared habitual offenders and a threat to public peace . Stating that after completion of all legal formalities detention orders were obtained from the District Magistrate Shopian, following which both accused were taken into custody and lodged in District Jail Udhampur Police in the concluding para of its above quoted statement reiterated its commitment to safeguard the lives and property of the people and firm action against habitual offenders to maintain peace and tranquillity in the region.
