CAIRNS – South Africa has taken a 1-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against Australia, securing a decisive 98-run victory in the opener on Tuesday. The win was anchored by a career-best bowling performance from spinner Keshav Maharaj, who claimed five wickets for just 33 runs.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Australia’s bowlers initially struggled to contain South Africa’s top order. The Proteas posted a formidable total of 296/8, thanks to half-centuries from Aiden Markram (82), Temba Bavuma (65), and Matthew Breetzke (57). Travis Head was Australia’s most successful bowler, taking 4/57.
In response, Australia’s chase began promisingly, reaching 60 for no loss. However, the momentum shifted dramatically with the introduction of spin. Maharaj, along with debutant Prenelan Subrayen, triggered a stunning collapse, taking six wickets for only 29 runs. Maharaj’s remarkable spell saw him dismiss Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Aaron Hardie in quick succession, leaving Australia reeling at 89/6.
Despite a valiant 88 from captain Mitchell Marsh, Australia was eventually bowled out for 198 in the 41st over. ATP
