National Handloom Day celebrated with grandeur at DC Office Complex Samba

SAMBA: The Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu, in collaboration with the Handloom Development Department, Samba, celebrated National Handloom Day at the DC Office Complex Samba, showcasing the region’s rich weaving traditions.

Deputy Commissioner Samba Rajesh Sharma, the Chief Guest, lauded the exceptional craftsmanship of local weavers and highlighted the sector’s role in preserving cultural heritage and generating sustainable livelihoods. He assured continued administrative support for artisans through capacity-building, training programmes and strong market linkages.

A series of vibrant stalls set up by local artisans and cooperative societies displayed a wide range of handloom and handicraft products. A live weaving demonstration by a master weaver offered visitors a unique insight into traditional techniques. The AYUSH Department also participated by setting up a wellness and awareness stall.

Prominent weavers and cooperative society members were felicitated for their contributions to the sector. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to recognise their dedication to traditional crafts, encouraging the weaving community.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner praised the Handloom Development Department, Samba, for its efforts in empowering the local weaving community. He called for innovative approaches to strengthen the sector, improve skill development, and expand market access.

Assistant Director, Handloom Development Department Samba, Niharika, delivered a presentation on welfare and promotional schemes for weavers. She urged artisans to take advantage of these schemes and integrate modern tools with traditional techniques for better productivity and profitability.
